Important Information on Returning Used Batteries

UN 3481 Used, worn-out or defective batteries must never be disposed of in household waste!

Batteries contain toxic substances such as mercury, cadmium and lead, which harm the environment when improperly disposed of. However, old batteries are valuable as recycled materials – lithium, for example, is more cost-effective and conserves resources. Additionally, recycling recovers valuable materials like zinc, steel/iron, aluminium, nickel, copper, silver, manganese and cobalt.

Under the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, consumers across Europe are required to dispose of used batteries separately from household waste.

The main rules are:

  • Consumers are required to use return options or arrange proper disposal themselves.
  • Retailers selling batteries or devices with batteries must take them back for disposal, but only the types they sell.

Return of Used Batteries

Please use the battery collection and return options available in your country. Depending on your location, used batteries can usually be handed in at local collection points, municipal recycling facilities or participating retailers.

Customers outside Germany should use the local battery collection and return systems available in their country. Returns by post to our address are only offered within Germany and only in accordance with the applicable transport regulations.

Safe Handling

Lithium-ion batteries, such as those used in e-scooters, e-bikes or robotic lawn mowers, should be protected against short circuits before disposal. Simply cover the contacts with adhesive tape. Never expose batteries to moisture, for example by storing them in a refrigerator. If a battery has already leaked, place it in a separate plastic bag.

Important: Damaged lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries must not be shipped according to ADR transport regulations. Before shipping any battery, please check the transport rules applicable in your country.
